12 YEARS A SLAVE
by Jeremy Goeckner, Head Reviewer
It's simple... This is the best film of the year.
It's interesting. I watched this film about two months before the Oscar nominations were announced. And even before I saw another film in awards consideration, I knew that this one was going to win the top honors. I don't tell you this to boast, but simply to reinforce that this is one of those rare films that transcends mere cinema and penetrates the soul. This film is high art, and there's no film this year that was better.
It's not so much one thing that makes this film so great either. It's the perfect convergence of so many good decisions and so many impeccable performances built on top of each other. And the result is a film so engrossing, so emotionally draining and so well-made that it creates kind of movie that rarely comes along more than once every couple of years.
The film is the true story of Solomon Northup,
Lupita Nyong'o and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
